nProtex is licensed by number of connected stations. If there is one server (web sup) and 10 JACE devices that would require 10 licensed stations, the only station that needs a license file is the server. Once the license file has been installed the subordinate JACE
Step 1. Install License (Automatic or Manual)
Automatic Installation
To automatically install or "fetch" your license:
- Navigate to Services/nProtexService/License within your Workbench station
- Right-click on License and select Action > Fetch License
At this point your license file will be downloaded from Activelogix servers, copied into the appropriate directory, and loaded. You should now be able to access nProtex through a browser at http://IP_of_host/nProtex.
Manual Installation
To manually install the license, copy the license file into the following folder:
- {STATION_HOME}/shared/alx
- On a typical CPU, this will be: C:\ProgramData\Niagara-4.X\{brand}\station\{station_name}\shared\alx
- On a typical CPU, this will be: C:\ProgramData\Niagara-4.X\{brand}\station\{station_name}\shared\alx
- The "alx" folder should be created if it does not already exist in your station shared folder.
Debug License
The "Debug License" action will generate some additional information about your license file into the Station Output. This can be a useful tool to identify license problems or assist tech support.

nProtex does not use normal Niagara licensing and does not require a certificate
Step 2. Tag Niagara Stations
Each subordinate station needs a simple "nprotex" tag to let nProtex know that it should be included in reports and licensed. This tag can be of any type and the only requirement is that it is a property named "nprotex" underneath the Niagara Station. The ProgramService can be used to batch add tags or it can be done manually by adding a slot.
Manual:
Navigate to the Niagara Network
View the Slot Sheet of the Station you'd like to license as one of the nProtex stations
Right Click > Add
Change the name to "nprotex"
Type can be set to anything such as a baja String
Click OK.
This will add a new slot of the selected type to your Niagara Station. Step 3 below will then activate this Station and all nProtex views will attempt to include it.
Step 3. Activate Subordinate Stations
The third step activates all connected JACEs which prevents having to install individual license files per station. To activate JACEs:
- Navigate to Services/nProtexService/License within your Workbench station
- Right-click on License and select Action > Activate Stations
This will attempt to connect to all Stations that were tagged in (2) in the Niagara Network, look for Services/nProtexService and activate them. Once activated, connected JACEs will be usable within Periscope as well as use the Firewall functionality.
